Don't count your Chickens! |
Denmark's Morten Andersen was the victim on this deal from Round 12 of the Generali European Open Championship. It was he who reported the details to the Daily News.
One Club was either natural or 15-19 balanced. North hit upon the fiendish lead of the two of hearts! Morten naturally played low and South put up the queen. Showing no sign of surprise he switched to a low club and when declarer played low North won with the singleton king. He switched to a diamond and declarer won with dummy's king and played a low spade. South produced the jack - by the way a good play from ªJ9 - and when declarer played the queen North ducked. He played the nine of spades on the next trick and won the third round of spades with the ace before trying to cash the ace of hearts. A surprised Morten ruffed and peering under the screen playfully admonished North for his cunning lead, indicating that although he had been fooled he had survived. It only remained to go to dummy to draw the outstanding trump. When Morten tried to get there with a club North ruffed and returned the compliment, popping his head under the screen with a smile. The laughter from all four players could be heard for some time! |
