The 15th European Youth Championships were held in Cardiff's Student Union, Great Britain.
The Championships consisted of two series: the Junior series and the Schools series. Both were played as round robins (all against all) without semifinals and final. Teams in the Junior series played for the David Pigot Cup, while the Schools had the José Damiani Trophy at stake. The first three winners of the Junior series qualified to represent Europe in the World Junior Championship, due to be held in Hamilton, ON, Canada in August 1997.
The Junior series was contested by 26 nations - an all time record. There were 14 countries taking part in the Schools series.
