The
5th European Mixed Championships
will be held in Aachen, Germany from 28 March to 3 April 1998.
The European Mixed Championships have been
attracting an ever increasing number of Europe' s top bridge players. In
Monaco, in 1996, the competition attracted 370 pairs and 83 teams
representing 25 countries.
The schedules have been arranged to give plenty
of opportunity for enjoying the many cultural attractions of Aachen.
This city founded in the 9th century was once the favourite home of Emperor
Charlemagne. Today it is a popular spa resort, a university city
with a beautiful old quarter.
This
is the fifth event of the series that was inaugurated in 1990 in
Bordeaux, France. As a biennial competition, it was held in 1992 in
Ostend, Belgium; in 1994 in Barcelona, Spain; and in 1996 in Monaco.
More than 1,000 players, including all the big
names in European Bridge, are expected to participate in this year' s
championships. Among them, there will be
the holders of the Team Competition, the French Medallists Veronique
Bessis, Michel Bessis,
Catherine Saul and
Paul Chemla, who are returning to
defend their title.
A cross National Team (allowed under the Rules
for the first time in Aachen) comprising of members from the German
Silver and Danish Bronze medallists in Monaco, must surely
present a "DanGer" to all - Sabine
Auken, Jens Auken,
Klaus Reps and Daniela
von Arnim. Other 1996 Danish Bronze medallists, Charlotte
Koch-Palmund and Dorthe Schaltz
will also be playing in an all-Danish team.
The
tournament will be played at the Eurogress
Aachen, a magnificent congress Centre with fine playing
conditions, conveniently situated in a beautiful park near the heart
of the historic city.
The championship address is:
