GREAT SUSPENSE

After three matches, the Polish new generation team, who are here replacing Italy at the last moment, were doing quite well. It would be a pleasant surprise to the Polish Bridge Union if they were to hold untill Sunday evening at this tournament for the CA-IB Trophy.

In the evening session, the situation changed dramatically. Poland 2, the New Generation team found their Waterloo temporarily against the experienced team from Sweden, going down 7-23. Elsewhere in the room, The Netherlands took on Austria only to achieve the same victory margin. In the other match, Poland 1 beat England 18-12 on Vugraph.

As a result of all this, the table looks very interesting with five teams still in contention for first place. The Netherlands are leading suddenly, 4 V.P. clear of Poland 2 and Sweden who share second place. Fourth place is shared also, by Poland 1 and Austria who are 6 V.P. behind the runners-up. This means that a near-blitz could make either of them the ultimate winners. The match of the day is of course Poland 2 v. Netherlands: we can only hope that it will be a marvellous show on Vugraph. A third party will be very interested in the outcome of this match: Sweden are to face Poland 1 and have a good chance of winning the trophy if they score a big win and the Netherlands lose narrowly. So an exciting finale is in sight at 12.00 on Sunday.
