Combinations in Defence |
The Yugoslavs have not been showing us their best dummy play, but there is from time to time a nice piece of defensive intelligence. This one features a neat combination, a deceptive duck and an unblock. Juniors Round 13 Finland - Yugoslavia
Poljacki (East) made an "old fashioned" lead when he selected the §6, that luckily worked well. Declarer took the §Q with the king, crossed to dummy via the ©Q and played the ¨4 to the ¨10. Poljacki imperturbably played small and after considerable thought declarer played the ¨A. He then stopped playing diamonds placing the ¨K with West and not wanting to lose perhaps four club tricks. Declarer now took the ©A and ©K, then the ªK and ªA. East unblocked by throwing his ªQ and when West came in with the ªJ at the next trick and returned a small club, Poljacki claimed all the remaining tricks for one down. |
