The European Junior Pairs Championship was established in 1991 following an idea by then EBL Youth Committee Chairman Panos Gerontopoulos . The biennial event was held in conjunction with the European Junior Camp, every odd-numbered year until 2003 and every even-numbered year as of 2006.
In 1995 it was opened also to non-Europeans, and the plan was to incorporate it into the World Junior Pairs Championships whenever the latter was held in Europe.
In 2006 it was split into two categories, Juniors and Schools, and the competition was renamed European Youth Pairs Championships (EYPC). In 2008 the EYPC were disassociated from the corresponding World Championships and again restricted to European players only. At the same time a new category, Girls, was added and the format was changed into allowing national pairs only.
In 2012 a new category, Mixed, was added.
