Schools Championship
Starts Today

The 2nd European Schools Championship was launched yesterday when the opening ceremony took place at the Students' Union Building. In his speech of welcome, the President of the British Bridge League, Patrick Jourdain, was able to announce that a record number of fourteen nations would be taking part, one more than participated in the first Championship, which was staged in Arnhem two years ago. The Chairman of the EBL Youth Committee, Panos Gerontopoulos, spoke of the considerable effort which had been made on behalf of the participants to ensure the success of the Championship and he went on to introduce the key officials. With the teams being unknown quantities, it might be considered either brave or foolhardy to venture a prediction but we are reliably informed that Italy have a good team and there are some famous looking names in the French one. Great Britain must be in with a shout as they include a player who has already competed at the highest levels, Abbey Walker, a member of Great Britain's last Venice Cup Team. All in all an exciting contest is in prospect.

Norway Join Denmark At The Top

In the Junior Championship Norway and Denmark are tied for first place on 199VP. The overnight leaders only just managed to retain their place at the head of the table, albeit a shared one, by defeating Norway 17-13, in what proved to a thrilling encounter when the two teams met in Round 10. Only 3.5 Victory points separate the third and fourth place teams, Israel (194VP) and Poland (190.5VP) but then there is the first sign of a gap as fifth placed Russia are on 175VP. Great Britain's chances of staging a comeback disappeared when after starting the day with a good win, they proceeded to score like one of the poorer entries for the Eurovision Song Contest. The Chairman of the EBL Youth Committee, Panos Gerontopoulos is normally reticent when it comes to predictions but after today's results he ventured to suggest that neither the holders or Greece would be amongst the medals!
