SUPERSTAR DAY

As the Open Championship starts the semifinal stage following the completion of the four qualifying sessions, today also witnesses the entry into the arena of the four exempted pairs of World Grandmasters. Add to that the opportunity for everyone to see the spectacular musical Jesus Christ Superstar and we should have a day to remember.

When checking the results one's natural instinct is to look at the top of the table but when the scores are posted there are several pairs who are glancing anxiously at the bottom of the second page and the top of the third to see if they have survived. So spare a thought for the unlucky pair who finished in 127th place, Italy's Arturo D'Angelo and Giuliani Gerard.

Entente Cordiale

Meanwhile we congratulate the qualifiers, who were headed by Poland's Witold & Tom Krysztofiak, closely followed by Bas Drijver and Simon de Wijs of the Netherlands and Israel's David Birman and Shalom Zeligman.

The Senior event reaches its first staging post today. Nissan Rand and Pinhas Romik of Israel have moved to the top of the leader board and they are followed by Italy's Franco Baroni and Marco Ricciarelli. Germany's top senior pair Hans Humburgh and Goran Mattsson are third.
